Maintaining good hygiene and taking care of your genitals (private parts) reduces the risks of developing problems like skin irritations and some common infections. Hence, it's important to know:

How to maintain the male genitals clean and healthy?

Gently wash the penis, scrotum, anus, as well as the pubic hair with warm water every day when taking a shower, a bath, or before and after sexual intercourse. These areas must be frequently washed to stop sweat from accumulating, especially since they are enclosed in underwear. If you want to use soap, choose a mild, unscented soap to reduce the risk of skin irritation.

If there is a foreskin, pull it back gently and wash underneath. When the underneath of the foreskin is not washed properly, a whitish-yellow substance called smegma (a natural lubricant that keeps the penis moist) will begin to build up which can start to smell, make it difficult to pull your foreskin back, become a breeding ground for bacteria, and cause redness and swelling of head of the penis.

Make it a habit to always wash your hands before and after urinating, especially if you are using public toilets as germs can easily spread through the hands. This is also very important if you have touched anything that might irritate your penis such as chemicals, chili peppers, or heat rub.

Keep the genital area clean and dry. Use a fresh pair of underwear or boxers. Try to wear a loose-fitting cotton underwear as it does not retain moisture.

After urinating, shake the penis gently so as to expel the remaining drops of urine. Wipe the area dry.

If you’d like to remove or trim your pubic hair, keep your skin type in mind. This will help you avoid razor burn and other discomfort.
  • When shaving, do so in the same direction that your hair grows. Use thick, unscented shaving cream and apply cortisone cream after to reduce irritation. Remember, never share razors with someone else, and disinfect yours before and after every use
  • If you don’t wish to remove the hair entirely, you can trim it with a pair of scissors or electric trimmer which shall only be used for grooming. Be sure to disinfect them before and after use.
